The Middle School Stand Together team and Steel Valley Wellness wrapped up their three-part series of Circle Talks on Tuesday, March 7. The sessions evolved out of a collaborative effort to introduce students to the basics of mental health and coping mechanisms.
The fourth annual International SEL Day is Friday, March 10. SEL stands for social emotional learning, which is the development of social and emotional skills alongside traditional curriculum of math, science, reading and more.

A group of Steel Valley seniors successfully met the challenges of the Tomb Explorer and Carnegie's Millions Escape Rooms at Ace Axe Throwing on March 2. When their snow tubing trip was cancelled due to the unusually warm February weather and recent rain, a new plan was put in place so the seniors could still enjoy a day of team building and memory making.

A group of high school students gathered today for the first session of Creating Peace. Over the next 12 weeks, these students will work together to learn what makes a healthy relationship - whether it's a friendship, connection to a family member, a romantic relationship, or even relationships with teachers and other adults.
History came to life for Steel Valley students and community members as they toured the 2023 edition of the Barrett Elementary Black History Month Interactive Living Museum on Thursday, February 23.
A group of student-leaders from Steel Valley High School had the opportunity to go ice skating at the PPG Ice Rink on February 22, thanks to the Tickets for Kids Organization. These students were chosen because they are Student Council Officers, Senior Class Officers, and/or in the Top 10 Academically of their Senior Class.
Students from the Middle School Expect Respect Program and volunteers from The Pittsburgh Study stopped by kindergarten, first grade and second grade classrooms today at Barrett. The older students read a selection of books with the elementary classes and then helped them do some crafts.
Barrett PTO is hosting a Bingo night for grown ups on Friday, February 24th from 6:30-8:30pm in the Barrett Elementary School gymnasium. Tickets are on sale in the Barrett school office or may be purchased at the door for $10. The community is invited. Grab your BINGO playing friends and join us!
Park Elementary did a behavior refresh on Thursday and Friday, practicing our Park Rules. Park stands for Prepared, Accountable, Respectful, Kind. To practice our Park Expectations even more, the students spent time in the "Glow Room!"
Steel Valley senior Cruce Brookins has been selected to be part of the Pennsylvania roster for the 2023 Big 33 Football Classic. The Big 33 is one of the largest and most celebrated high school all-star football games in the country.
The High School Student Council celebrated National Random Acts of Kindness Week during the week of February 13. Thanks to Ms. Wright and the Art Club, a tree was created on which we hung acts of kindness that had been observed by staff and students during the week. We also posted Kindness Quotes throughout the school and on the TVs in the lobby and cafeteria to remind everyone how important the act of kindness is.
The High School Student Council would like to thank everyone who donated to their collection for Beverly’s Birthdays. Beverly’s Birthdays is an organization that provides birthday cheer for children experiencing homelessness and families in need. Their Beverly’s Babies division provides critical baby care items and life sustaining resources for expecting parents and new babies.
Second grader Emerson Yakubic will be performing in Beauty and the Beast, Jr. at the Gargaro Theater in Pittsburgh February 16-19! If you have a chance, check out this amazing performance in this Broadway style theater! Break a leg, Emerson!
The Stand Together club in the Middle School decorated every 4th locker this morning with candy and informational fliers symbolizing the 1 in 4 youth affected by mental illness.
Students in Ms. Dunmire’s 7th grade math class did a quick spiral review recently using an interactive Olympic Theme to practice math skills learned thus far this year.
Pittsburgh Cares has named Steel Valley seventh grader Austin Blick as one of its Kids Who Care winners in honor of his willingness to go above and beyond to make a difference in the Steel Valley community.
The Middle School PBIS team rewarded students on Thursday, February 9 for their great behavior during January with a hot chocolate bar during all of the lunches.

Steel Valley High School seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field had the opportunity to view an open heart surgery at Allegheny General Hospital on February 8. Students Chelsea Bulger, Jennifer Nguyen, Myrian Perez-Paulino, and Madison Blasko witnessed the 4-hour open heart surgery from the observation deck above the operating room. While peering down through the glass window, they were able to watch the surgeon, nurse, surgical tech, anesthesiologist, perfusionist, and other surgical team members of AGH perform a Redo Sternotomy, a Redo Aortic Root Replacement, and an Aortic Valve Replacement.
As a collaboration between UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown, Inc., the Care Mobile offers no out-of-pocket cost medical care to children throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. The Care Mobile will be at Steel Valley High School - Feb. 27 & April 24 and Barrett Elementary - March 27
The second of three Circle Talks sessions took place on Tuesday, February 7 for middle school students. The sessions are co-hosted by the Steel Valley Stand Together team and Steel Valley Wellness co-owner and licensed professional counselor, Katie Whitney.
