This is to inform you that a staff member in the high school / middle school building has been diagnosed with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Our District practice is that anyone presenting with the signs or symptoms, or have been diagnosed with MRSA, must have a note from their health care provider to return to work/school. The Steel Valley School District has begun the process of disinfecting and using precautions to provide a safe clean environment for all students and staff members to the best of their ability. The county health agency has been notified and will advise us if any additional precautions need to be taken. MRSA is a type of bacterial infection commonly found on the skin. This common bacterium is a treatable infection that responds to specific antibiotics.

Student Council will continue a very special service project this year called Gavin’s Memory Mittens. You may remember this service project from the last few years. Please help us decorate Gavin’s tree in the high school lobby with donations of NEW mittens, hats, gloves, warm socks, and scarves. All items will then be donated to children of the Steel Valley community who need them for the upcoming winter season. This operation is in honor and memory of Baby Gavin Thomas who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on 12/28/2007 at almost 3 months of age. Gavin is “forever in our hearts.” If you work in a building other than the high school or middle school and would like to donate some items for Gavin’s Tree, please send them to Beth McCallister via interschool mail. We will be sure to get them placed on the tree.
