Dear Steel Valley Students, Staff, and Families:

The safety of our students and staff is always of utmost importance to our school district and community.

Following recent events that have occurred within our Barrett Elementary School community, including an incident on school grounds and another incidence of violence in the immediate area, we are actively taking steps to mitigate risk and ensure the safety of our students, staff, and school community.

To alleviate safety concerns and work to create the safest environment possible, we are putting the following measures in place, effective immediately:

  • The Homestead police will be present at dismissal to ensure the safety of our students and staff as they exit the building.
  • We will provide additional lighting around the school building and parking area for evening events.
  • Adjustment of staff arrival time in the morning to ensure safe entry into the school building
  • Extending time for the School Resource Officer to be present for student and staff dismissal.

Our concern for our schools and community is paramount. The recent incidents in our area challenge us to always do and be better at taking every possible step to create safe places for our students and staff to learn and work. We will continue to work diligently and proactively to provide the safest environment possible for our students, staff, and school community.

Sincerely,

Bryan M. Macuga

Interim Superintendent
