The to-do list for any educator seems almost endless in August. Preparing for the start of the school year is a hectic, exhausting practice. It’s even more crazed when you’re joining a new school district in a new role – the computer system is different, the hallways are a labyrinth, and there is a never-ending stream of information to digest. Kimberly Winters’ to-do list is long, but it can’t match her excitement to be the new principal at Barrett Elementary.

The Steel Valley Board of School Directors is accepting letters of interest for a vacancy on the board. District residents interested in serving on the school board are invited to submit letters of interest. Letters of interest must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023.

Now the Vice President of Business Development for Deep Well Services, Sabo is taking what he learned to help connect recent Steel Valley graduates with career opportunities in the oil and gas industry.

Students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch during school will receive extra food benefits called Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) benefits to cover the summer of 2023. Families with students who were enrolled at Steel Valley through the end of the school year will receive a letter informing them about the program and their eligibility.

Senior Parking Spot Painting

Steel Valley School District is allowing senior students to paint their own parking spot again this school year. This activity is aimed at improving school pride and camaraderie. Senior students can "own" a piece of the school during their senior year. SENIOR CLASS FUNDRAISER: Purchasing a Reserved Senior Parking Space allows the purchasing senior student to personalize their assigned space by painting it. Funds raised will be used for senior activities. Reserving and painting parking spaces is a privilege rather than a right.

Mark your calendars - Funder Under the Bridge 2023 has a date. The sixth edition of the annual Steel Valley School District fundraiser and community event is penciled in for Sunday, October 15. Planning for the event was a primary topic at the district's July community meeting, which was held on July 12 at the high school library.

The Act 34 Hearing at Steel Valley

The Steel Valley School District board of school directors, school administrators, and representatives from DRAW Collective publicly presented plans for a new elementary school and listened to feedback from citizens as part of an Act 34 hearing on Thursday, June 22.

The Steel Valley School District has been recognized as a 2022-23 Healthy School Awardee by Women for a Healthy Environment. The organization's Healthy Schools Recognition Program celebrates schools throughout the region that take steps to "create a green and healthy learning environment for their school community."

A passion for learning led Dr. Jean M. Vettel to enroll early at Carnegie Mellon University to study professional writing and communication design. It was the start of a journey that eventually led the Steel Valley alum to earn a doctorate degree in cognitive neuroscience and to play a role in helping keep our nation's military prepared to face future adversaries.

The Steel Valley School District will host a public hearing in the high school auditorium on Thursday, June 22 to review all relevant matters pertaining to the construction of a new elementary school.

Steel Valley Class of 2023 tosses their caps into the air

With a shift of their tassels and a countdown from senior class president Gabrielle Matusky, the Steel Valley Class of 2023 launched their caps into the air and took a giant leap toward the next stage of their lives. The Steel Valley School District celebrated its 52nd annual commencement on Wednesday, May 31 at the William V. Campbell Athletic Field in Munhall.

Members of the Class of 2023 painted their names to the cliffside on West Run Road in Munhall on Wednesday, May 31 prior to commencement. Their names joined those of the Class of 2022, who added their names last year in a revival of a tradition that dates back decades.

Mother Nature tried her best, but a bit of rain didn't dampen the spirits at Steel Valley's first Community Day. Held on the Steel Valley High School campus near the Steel Valley Grows Garden, Saturday's event was designed to bring residents and organizations of all three boroughs together with district staff and students.
