AP Biology Earns Students College Credits

Advanced Placement Biology (AP Biology) is a high level, rigorous course offered to students interested in earning possible credits for college. The course is the most expansive of its kind at the High School, covering 40 chapters of a college-level text between September and the end of April. Because of this, if students earn a 3, 4 or 5 on the nationally offered AP exam, they may earn up to eight credits of biology for biology majors at a post-secondary institution.

The content begins with a review of chemistry and biochemistry, moves through cell parts and functions, microbiology, disease, gene regulation, body systems, evolution, ecology, and population genetics. There are 13 labs completed throughout the year to enhance the course content.

Following the cumulative exam, students complete independent research projects and present their data in the form of a paper written in APA format.

Last year, nine Steel Valley High School students scored a three or higher on the AP Biology Exam. This was a marked increase from previous years. Kudos to our students on their performance and also to Mrs. Maddigan, as this was her first year of teaching the course.

AP Biology is just one of the Advanced Placement and College in High School courses available at Steel Valley.
