Middle School students hold signs and cheer in the stands in a gymnasium

Steel Valley Middle School students competed in a total of 27 dodgeball games on Tuesday, April 4. The competitions featured fifth and sixth graders competing against each other and seventh and eighth graders competing against each other. The winning teams in each group took on the teachers and won bragging rights for the rest of the year.

The spring 2023 PSSA exams will take place in late April and early May. The Middle School will be on a modified schedule on those dates - April 24, 25 and 26, and May 1 and 2. Please see this letter from Mr. Brown for full details.

SADD March TRU Conference

On Friday, March 17th, SADD Officers attended the Second Annual Tobacco Resistance Unit (TRU) Conference in Irwin, PA at the Antonelli Event Center.  Steel Valley SADD is excited to make this a new yearly tradition!

Today SVMS celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and Stand Together promoted the powerful message of 1:4 teens suffering from a Mental Illness through a series of activities during lunch as well as every 4th locker being decorated with starbursts and skittles this morning.

A session of Circle Talks

The Middle School Stand Together team and Steel Valley Wellness wrapped up their three-part series of Circle Talks on Tuesday, March 7. The sessions evolved out of a collaborative effort to introduce students to the basics of mental health and coping mechanisms.

Expect Respect students with their friends from Barrett Elementary

Students from the Middle School Expect Respect Program and volunteers from The Pittsburgh Study stopped by kindergarten, first grade and second grade classrooms today at Barrett. The older students read a selection of books with the elementary classes and then helped them do some crafts.

National Acts of Kindness Week

February 17, 2023

The High School Student Council celebrated National Random Acts of Kindness Week during the week of February 13. Thanks to Ms. Wright and the Art Club, a tree was created on which we hung acts of kindness that had been observed by staff and students during the week. We also posted Kindness Quotes throughout the school and on the TVs in the lobby and cafeteria to remind everyone how important the act of kindness is.

The High School Student Council would like to thank everyone who donated to their collection for Beverly’s Birthdays. Beverly’s Birthdays is an organization that provides birthday cheer for children experiencing homelessness and families in need. Their Beverly’s Babies division provides critical baby care items and life sustaining resources for expecting parents and new babies.

The Stand Together club in the Middle School decorated every 4th locker this morning with candy and informational fliers symbolizing the 1 in 4 youth affected by mental illness.

Students compete in math olympics events

Students in Ms. Dunmire’s 7th grade math class did a quick spiral review recently using an interactive Olympic Theme to practice math skills learned thus far this year.

Pittsburgh Cares has named Steel Valley seventh grader Austin Blick as one of its Kids Who Care winners in honor of his willingness to go above and beyond to make a difference in the Steel Valley community.

Students are served at a hot chocolate bar during lunch

The Middle School PBIS team rewarded students on Thursday, February 9 for their great behavior during January with a hot chocolate bar during all of the lunches.

Students participate in the second Circle Talk session

The second of three Circle Talks sessions took place on Tuesday, February 7 for middle school students. The sessions are co-hosted by the Steel Valley Stand Together team and Steel Valley Wellness co-owner and licensed professional counselor, Katie Whitney.

The 7th and 8th grade dance will be held this Friday, February 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, February 1 and Thursday, February 2 in the cafeteria during lunch periods.

Beginning Monday, January 30, there will be a change to the student entry process. Students in 7th and 8th grades will continue to enter the building through the main high school entrance. Students in 5th and 6th grades will now enter the building through the middle school entrance.

Jordan Corcoran shares her mental health advocacy with Steel Valley students

Jordan Corcoran, the founder of the mental health organization Listen, Lucy, visited Steel Valley on Wednesday, January 25 to speak with middle school and high school students about erasing stigmas around mental health and the importance of caring about their own mental health.

Caring Closet - 1/25/23

The Caring Closet mission is to serve students who are financially struggling and in need of a little extra help with obtaining daily necessities; those students who are striving to do well academically, but need an extra boost to ensure their focus can be on their education and not on meeting their basic needs. If you have donations of school supplies, hygiene products, or "like new" or "gently used" school uniform clothing appropriate for middle school or high school aged students, please contact us.
