Congratulations Mr. Large

Mr. Large, a 5th grade Math and Science teacher at the middle school, was nominated last year by a student for the Pittsburgh Pirate's All Star Teacher Award.  The Pittsburgh Pirates, Chevron and The Grable Foundation, teamed up to honor 18 All Star Teachers.  Today, while teaching class, he found out that he won!  The Pirate Parrot surprised Mr. Large and his class with the award and $1000 check to be used in his classroom.  He will also be honored at a Pittsburgh Pirate's Baseball Game.  We are so very proud of you Mr. Large!

Our middle school did an outstanding job with this year’s Math-A-Thon by raising $2513.92 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!!  The students pictured here each raised at least $50 in donations.  Thank you to everyone who helped to support this service project.

Congratulations to Mrs. Olson's Math Class

Mrs. Olson’s classes competed to see which class could bring in the most donations for this year’s Math-A-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  All 3 classes did an outstanding job and brought in a combined total of $851.  Thank you to everyone who helped support this worthwhile service project.

Infy Maker Grant Video

Steel Valley Middle School has applied for an Infy Maker Grant for $10,000.  In order to be eligible for this grant, they had to create and publish a video showing our "maker" movement.  Wish us luck!!!

Steel Valley Middle School has been awarded the PASmart grant for $35,000.  Gifted Support teacher, Heather Clark wrote the grant so the middle school could start a coding club.  Currently coding is not taught in the middle school and Mrs. Clark thought this would be a great first step.  The money will provide the middle school with MacBook Pro's to teach X-code and professional development for the teacher's who will run the program.  You can check out the grant here.

Santa Is Coming To Town!

It seems as though a special guest is preparing to arrive at the Holiday Vocal Concert next Tuesday, December 18th.
The concert features the voices of over 130 students from grades 5-12.
The admission is free, but we are collecting items for Gavin’s Memory Tree, so bring a new pair of socks, mittens, scarves, gloves or hats to be donated to the folks in the Steel Valley Community.  The Concert begins at 7:00 PM in the High School auditorium.  Its a great way to get into the Holiday spirit!

Veteran's Day Assembly

Steel Valley organized another beautiful tribute to our Veteran's during the Veteran's Day Assembly.  High school students wrote speeches to honor our Veterans, and students in all grades participated in an essay contest remembering the sacrifice our troops have faced so our country remains free.  The band and choir also put together lovely pieces that showed our appreciation for all they have given.
