Career Fair connects current students with alumni in STEM careers

STEM Career Fair Scenes

Generations of Steel Valley alumni returned to their alma mater on Friday, May 16 to share information about their career paths, current jobs, and general life advice as part of the first Steel Valley STEM Career Fair.

Each of the graduates who took part in the fair is currently working in the STEM field. For some, their day revolves around the skills they’ve directly developed as scientists, engineers, and more. Others are using their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics alongside other skills they’ve developed as part of a support or supervisory role for their employers.

Current high school students in grades 9-12 visited the library to meet with each of the representatives. Students came during their dedicated science periods and were able to ask specifics about careers – including the education needed to pursue those careers. Even if there wasn’t a career path that caught their eye, the students were able to chat with the alumni about general advice. The alumni were in their shoes at one point – some just a few years ago – and were eager to share any wisdom that they could offer.

The STEM Career Fair was organized by Mrs. Michelle Maddigan with the goal of connecting current students with alumni in careers they may be interested in pursuing.  The alumni covered a wide range of careers and experience. Some, like David Dorko, graduated from Steel Valley in the 1980s. Others, like Riley Furrick, graduated just a couple of years ago.

Thank you to the following alumni who returned to offer insight and guidance to current Steel Valley students:

  • David Dorko – Pharmacy Operations Manager
