Students collaborate on a science experiment at a lab table

On Oct. 4th and 6th, Mrs. McGrew ‘s 7th grade science classes were invited to Mrs. Ranade's high school chemistry class. The objective was to have middle school and high school kids collaborate in doing science experiments.

Mrs. Ranade had trained her honors Chemistry students how to teach middle school kids to use strikers and light the Bunsen burners. She also trained them in carrying out a fun experiment called flame tests where middle school kids got to watch rainbow colors produced by Bunsen burner flames due to ionic compounds of some metals in column 1 and 2 of the periodic table.

Mrs. Ranade showed the location of these special elements on the periodic table and also explained how fireworks are made using this chemistry principle. This collaborative activity definitely sparked the interest in science among middle school kids and the love for science!
