The Steel Valley School District Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Brian Plichta as the Acting Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2026. Dr. Plichta will serve in his position while the Board of Directors continues its search for a permanent successor to outgoing Superintendent Bryan M. Macuga, whose final day is June 30, 2026.
Currently the district’s Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Plichta joined the Steel Valley School District in May 2024 following an extensive career in education with the West Mifflin School District, where he served as building principal across multiple grade levels, among other roles.
The Board of Directors formally approved Dr. Plichta’s appointment during its voting meeting on Thursday, June 25, 2026. During the meeting, the Board of Directors also approved the hiring of Ms. Cara McKenna as the principal at Steel Valley Middle School. Ms. McKenna was most recently the interim principal at Park Elementary in the district. Prior to joining the Steel Valley School District, Ms. McKenna was principal at Logan Elementary in the East Allegheny School District and spent over a decade as an assistant principal at various Pittsburgh Public Schools.


The district would like to formally welcome two other recent hires to the administrative team. Mr. Anthony Piscioneri was hired as the Director of Finance, Operations, and Human Resources and began in his position in April. Prior to joining the Steel Valley School District, Mr. Piscioneri was the Director of Financial and Personnel Services for the Bethel Park School District and worked with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. Mr. Larry George was hired as the Director of Technology and will begin in his position in July. Mr. George joins Steel Valley from the Derry Area School District.
