I am writing to inform you of an incident that happened after school yesterday, October 30, 2023 at approximately 3: 15 pm. A staff member exiting the building was approached by a male that lunged at them knocking their keys to the ground. After the encounter, the male continued to walk past the front of the building. The staff member returned to the building for assistance. The male suspect involved was immediately apprehended by Homestead Police who were on duty near the school. The school and Homestead Police worked collectively to confirm the identity of the suspect through the use of video surveillance. I held a meeting with the staff today to implement some new safety procedures and we have the support and protection of the Homestead Police Department who will be assisting us at dismissal. I will send a letter with the changes being made as soon as possible. Safety is our number one priority and we will do whatever is necessary to protect the students and staff here at Barrett Elementary. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
