Steel Valley teams with Coro Pittsburgh to host first Community Day

Mother Nature tried her best, but a bit of rain didn't dampen the spirits at Steel Valley's first Community Day. Held on the Steel Valley High School campus near the Steel Valley Grows Garden, Saturday's event was designed to bring residents and organizations of all three boroughs together with district staff and students.

Christine Schott and the Steel Valley Grows Garden had seedlings and plants available for a small donation. The Steel Valley Gridiron Club ran a basket raffle. State representative Matt Gergely stopped by with a donation of toys and other items. Several other organizations ran booths or had tables set up, including Women for a Healthy Environment/Healthy Schools, the Carnegie Library of Homestead, Coro Pittsburgh, Rivers of Steel, the Best of the Batch Foundation, Lazaven Mitchell and Empowering Teens to Thrive, Steel Valley Farmers Market, the Dragon's Den, and SV Friends and Alums.

Thank you to everyone who braved the inclement weather to stop by. The idea for a Community Day originated in a discussion at one of the district's community meetings and plans came together rather quickly. The hope is take feedback from Saturday's event and begin the planning process early in the 2023-24 school year for the next event.

Community Day was organized by district staff members and fellows from Coro Pittsburgh, an organization that develops future leaders who wish to affect change in the community.
