Students from the Middle School Expect Respect Program and volunteers from The Pittsburgh Study stopped by kindergarten, first grade and second grade classrooms today at Barrett. The older students read a selection of books with the elementary classes and then helped them do some crafts.
The Expect Respect program works with students to identify the characteristics of healthy relationships and to develop the skills to foster those positive relationships. Bringing the students to Barrett helped them play the role of being mentors.
Many of the books read today were made available courtesy of the 3Rs program, which helps connect with protagonists that they can identify with. When young students have access to books that inspire them, it encourages them to read more and develop their reading and language skills.
