Thanks to a $500 donation from Kids of Steel, Barrett Elementary students in the after school fitness program will be able to have transportation and supplies for the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on April 30.

The donation is part of a grant that Kids of Steel offers to help students in need be able to compete in the race. The extra funding will ensure that their parents and guardians can be on site to watch them run and to make sure the students have the proper supplies to be ready for race day.

The Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is part of the Pittsburgh Marathon Race Weekend at the end of April. The Kids Marathon is part of the first day of races on Saturday, April 30, which includes a 5K, toddler trot, and pet walk. On Sunday, May 1, the annual Pittsburgh Marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay will take center stage.

The Kids Marathon is the capstone to the spring Kids of Steel program. Throughout the spring, kids in the program will hone their technique and build up their stamina, running a total of 25 total miles throughout the course of the program. The 26th and final mile will come in the Kids Marathon, which will take them from PNC Park through downtown Pittsburgh to the finish line at Point State Park.

Mrs. Amy Selik and Mrs. Betty Lyons have been working alongside principal Mr. Kevin Walsh to help the Barrett runners get ready for the event. This is the fifth year of the Kids of Steel program at Barrett and currently 15 to 20 students participate. They will be among the thousands of students from around the region who will be off and running on April 30.
