On Thursday, June 25, the Steel Valley School District conducted public hearings related to the closure of Barrett Elementary and Park Elementary. These hearings are required by Section 780 of the Pennsylvania Public School Code. They provide the district with an opportunity to share additional information for the reasons behind the school closures and allow for the public to comment.
Acting Superintendent Dr. Brian Plichta shared two presentations explaining the decision to close Barrett Elementary and Park Elementary, a decision which led to the construction of Steel Valley Elementary. The new elementary school, which will combine all Steel Valley students from Pre-K through fifth grade into one, state-of-the-art building, is on schedule to open in August 2026.
Members of the community were able to provide public comment during the hearings. Written public comment remains open for 90 days from June 25, 2026. Written comments may be submitted via email to board secretary and confidential secretary to the superintendent and business offices Ms. Gale Emery at gemery@steelvalleysd.org.
The presentations Dr. Plichta shared during the hearings are available for the public to review below.
