Barrett students perform final spring concert in style

Students dance to Michael Jackson

Thursday, May 14 was the final spring concert at Barrett Elementary, and the students went out in style with some of their all-time favorites.

With elementary music teacher Ms. Kerry Melega leading the way, the fourth grade beginning band opened the show with "Hot Cross Buns," "Let's Go Band," the theme from "Jurassic Park," "Merrily We Roll Along," and "Farm Out."

Kindergarten played tribute to spring and the rapidly approaching summer break with "Oh, Mister Sun," had some fun with "Aiken Drum," and closed out with "Each of Us Is a Flower." First grade kept the warm, summer vibes going with "Listen to the Water" and "It's a Sunshine Day" before celebrating America's favorite past-time with "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

The last couple of years, Pre-K has been able to join in for the concert fun. On Thursday, that meant singing their hearts out to "Shake My Sillies Out" and "We're Goin' to the Zoo." Second grade followed them with performances of "I Love the Mountains," "Shake Them 'Simmons Down," and "Mac & Cheese."

Third and fourth grade had the honor of closing out the final concert at Barrett. Third grade performed "The Rock Island Line," "Old Dan Tucker," and the classic "The Rattlin' Bog." They also joined the fourth graders for "Somewhere Only We Know."

Finally, you can't have a concert full of greatest hits without some Michael Jackson. In honor of the King of Pop and to celebrate the various generations of music they've learned this year, the fourth graders performed Jackson's massive hit "Beat It" to wrap up the show.

Thank you to Ms. Melega for her work with the students all year. We also appreciate the efforts of Mr. Janov as stage manager and the Barrett Special Events Committee for preparing the decorations. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended and who has supported our concerts over the years. We look forward to taking the music to Steel Valley Elementary in the fall!
