Second annual STEM Career Fair connects students with alumni in emerging fields

Current Steel Valley High School students met with generations of alumni who are currently working in STEM fields on Friday, May 8 as part of the second annual STEM Career Fair.

Each of the representatives had some sort of connection to the STEM field. Some have skills that they utilize daily as engineers, scientists, and more. Others use their skills in management, risk assessment, or economics in the STEM industry or to lead teams in the STEM industry.

From recent graduates who are making headway while still in college to self-starters who went through a trade school to those pursuing their doctorate, the alumni who returned to speak with students have followed many different pathways to their success. That was an important aspect of this career fair, as it showcased the multiple options available to students as they discover their passions and decide what they'd like to do for a career.

The STEM Career Fair was open to all ninth through 12th grade students as part of their science classes. The guests also happily engaged with the current students with general advice, from conducting college searches to classes to take while still in high school.

The STEM Career Fair was created by Ms. Michelle Maddigan last year prior to her retirement to create a network of Steel Valley alumni that current students could tap into and learn more about potential careers. Ms. Maddigan graciously offered some assistance as Ms. Meagan Tracy took over the organization this year. With the help of assistant superintendent Dr. Brian Plichta, Ms. Tracy was able to secure a grant through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit to help fund the event.

Staff and adult participants wore t-shirts celebrating the event throughout the day. The design on the t-shirt was created by student Mason Rager and draws inspiration from the Ironman statute outside of the high school entrance.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the second annual STEM Career Fair a success!
