Young George Washington pays a visit to Barrett and Park

History came to life inside Steel Valley's two elementary schools on February 25 and February 26, as Colonel George Washington made the long trip from Mount Vernon to speak with students about his previous experiences in Western Pennsylvania.

Before he became the commander of the Continental Army and the first President of the United States, George Washington was an officer in the Virginia Regiment. It was during this period that Washington spent a significant amount of time in Western Pennsylvania, and it's an important period in the region's history. During his service, he was charged with negotiating with the French for control of the Ohio Country, portions of which include modern day Pennsylvania.

When negotiations failed, Washington was among the leaders of the military campaign that led to the construction of Fort Necessity, the Battle of the Monongahela alongside General Edward Braddock, the battle and eventual capture of Fort Duquesne, and more.

The students also learned about Washington's education and interests, including his fondness for mathematics and work as a surveyor. After listening to George Washington share some stories and wisdom, the students had an opportunity to ask the future president some questions.

The visit was made possible by Braddock's Battlefield History Center and its team of educators. Thank you for visiting our elementary schools and educating our students about such an important historical figure!

Enjoy some photos from the visit to both schools.
