Safety, accountability, and respect were rewarded with an obstacle course, colored powder, and an afternoon run in the sunshine, thanks to Steel Valley Middle School’s PBIS Team. The Color Run, a one-mile course behind the middle school, was a reward to any student in grades 5-8 who earned three strong bucks for doing the right thing.
The PBIS Student Leadership Team helped set up the course, sell concessions, and disperse colored powder as runners made their way around the field, over a hurdle, and through a tunnel. Though many students began the event in white t-shirts, they finished the course covered in a rainbow of colors. More than 120 students participated in the Color Run, lining up in groups for their turn to take to the field.
Several teachers also participated in the event. The PBIS Team, consisting of Jess Luft, Terrie Hoffman, Nikki States, Bri Bell, and Jodi Geyer, set up the course and coordinated the event for the students who exhibited positive behavior throughout the month of September. Principal Stone also participated in the run and may have set a course record with his stellar performance. Music teacher Andrew Roberts joined in as a volunteer who was slimed by students, along with Mr. Stone, Mrs. Luft, and Ms. Bell. Carmella Marzec helped with photography and Ray Braszo made a very generous donation to the participants.
“The students had a fantastic time today and the run was a huge success,” said Mrs. States. “This is such a fun way to reward good behaviour and for students to see how much fun school can be,” she added.
Color this run a success.
