Barrett students share tunes from famous musicals during spring concert

Scenes from the concert

Barrett Elementary students stepped into the spotlight on Thursday, May 22 and took the audience on a trip through some familiar Broadway, Disney, and Silver Screen tunes during their spring concert.

Each song performed by the students was selected by elementary music teacher Ms. Kerry Melega to celebrate friendship and togetherness. Every song the students sang also came from a famous stage or film musical.

The fourth grade beginning band showed off their clarinet and trumpet skills with renditions of "Hot Cross Buns," "Au Claire De La Lune," "Lightly Row," and "Merrily We Roll Along." Third grade was the first class to sing and began with two very familiar songs that play with language. Their songs included "Do Re Mi" from "The Sound of Music," the extremely challenging "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from "Mary Poppins," and "Dig a Little Deeper" from "The Princess and the Frog."

Kindergarten was up next and performed "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" from the Disney film "Song of the South," "When You Wish Upon A Star" from "Pinocchio," and "The Jitterbug" from the stage version of "The Wizard of Oz."

Second grade came next and performed "The Candy Man" from "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "Happiness" from "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," and the fan favorite "The Bare Necessities" from "The Jungle Book."

The Pre-K students made a special appearance and performed two songs made famous by Shirley Temple - "Animal Crackers in My Soup" and "On the Good Ship Lollipop."

The wet weather was perfect for the first graders, as their songs included performances of "I Love to Walk in the Rain" from "Just Around the Corner," "I'm Singin' in the Rain" from the film "Singin' in the Rain," and "Tomorrow" from "Annie."

Fourth grade closed out the show with "Under the Sea" from "The Little Mermaid," "Catch a Falling Star" from "The Princess Diaries," and "Starmakers" from the Kids from "Fame." The last piece was arranged by Ms. Melega!

As always, it takes a lot of helping hands to put this show together. Art teacher Ms. Jesse McCreery served as stage manager alongside Ms. Melega's direction, and she helped arrange a lot of the props and decorations. Each class also helped with decorations throughout the gym. Mrs. Betty Lyons, Ms. Tiffany Cibula, and Mrs. Mary Jo Votedian also played big roles alongside the Special Events Committee and the entire Barrett staff.
