Anastasia Wehrer earns award in Duquesne University MLK Essay contest

Ana Wehrer award

Steel Valley High School student Anastasia Wehrer was recently recognized by Duquesne University for her submission in the university's Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Essay Contest.

Anastasia's submission received third place honors in the competition. Her work was celebrated at the university's annual MLK luncheon, where she was presented a plaque and additional mementos from Ms. Crystal McCormick Ware. A Steel Valley alum, Ms. McCormick Ware is Duquesne University's Inaugural Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Advisor to the President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Anastasia was joined at the banquet by her family and Mr. Olando Dulin, the Steel Valley School District's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator.

Anastasia's essay was in response to a prompt that required the students to reflect on a quote by Dr. King that resonated with them. They were asked to highlight what the message meant to them and why they felt Dr. King's words embodied his work as a fighter for justice and equality. The submissions were open to all middle school and high school students.

Congratulations to Anasatasia!
