The Steel Valley School District hosted its April community meeting on Wednesday, April 12 at Barrett Elementary. The meeting served as a platform for eight Steel Valley High School students to share details about their experiences as students. The students spoke about the ways they have benefited academically, athletically and creatively while in the district. They also offered some suggestions and ideas for ways that the district could improve to help all students.
The students who spoke during the meeting were Bre Francis, J.J. Heddleston, Mike Crist, Brenna Kern, Madison Blasko, Finley Weis, Chelsea Bulger, and Makhai Valentine.
The meeting also featured an update from Olando Dulin on the district’s diversity, equity and inclusion programming. Several students involved in those programs spoke about their experiences in the various programs run through Mr. Dulin’s office and noted the impact that the programs have had on Steel Valley students. Superintendent Edward Wehrer shared additional information about athletic, academic and creative arts endeavors in the district.
Coro Pittsburgh provided an update on the district’s new CommUNITY Day, which is scheduled for May 20 at the high school. The day is designed to be an opportunity for residents of all three boroughs to gather together to celebrate the end of the school year.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium and serve as a “Meet the Candidates Night.” Community members from all three boroughs will be able to meet with candidates running for school board seats as well as borough council positions.
