Superintendent Wehrer's November Newsletter Message

Steel Valley Superintendent Edward Wehrer speaks during the 2021 graduation ceremony.

Dear Steel Valley Families,

We have asked a great deal of our students over the past 18 months. They have experienced the most disrupted educational environment in recent memory because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They have missed out on traditional social experiences, seen their activities reduced or altered, and had to navigate the transitions back and forth between in-person instruction and virtual learning.

While we have had some bumps in the road in our return to full in-person learning, the benefits of having our students back in the buildings and experiencing all that Steel Valley has to offer are readily apparent. As we are accustomed to seeing, our students again are displaying fantastic skills and talents.

More than a few of our students who attend Steel Center for Career and Technical Education have earned special recognition this school year. Dylan Karstetter was named a Steel Center Student of the Month in September for his work in Diesel Technology. Four more students were acknowledged as Steel Center Students of the Month for October: Charles Wallace (Building Trades); Erica Keeley (Medical Professions); Taylor Stump (Public Safety); and Connor Brady (Veterinary Assistant).

Four other students were recognized as Extra Effort Award Winners by Steel Center for the first 9 weeks: Anthony Vickers in Computer Technology, Makhai Valentine in Culinary Arts, Mekayla Scalise in Medical Professions, and Se'Riyah Hughes in Veterinary Assistant. Congratulations to all of our Steel Center students for their incredible achievements!

Our students are shining in athletics, too. For the second year in a row, the girls soccer team captured the Section 2-1A title, and they have advanced to the WPIAL Class 1A semifinals where they will take on Springdale on Monday, November 1. Soraya Gibbs, Kelsey Salopek, Chelsea Bulger, Krystal Phouthavong and Therese Doering were named to the All-Section team. After finishing the regular season undefeated with the Allegheny Conference championship, the football team is preparing for the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, beginning with a first round game against Beth-Center on Friday. Nijhay Burt leads the entire WPIAL in both rushing yards and scoring. On the volleyball court, our girls team placed four players on the All-Section team: Isabella Ruston was named to the third team, Brooke Farrah and Brooke Weber were selected to the second team, and Abby Tester was named to the first team. In cross country, Alex Brown fell just short of qualifying for the state championship meet.

Congratulations to these students for their amazing achievements and to all of our learners for their perseverance and dedication.

Sincerely,
Edward Wehrer
Superintendent
