Thirty Steel Valley Middle School students in grades 5 through 8 took part in a training program run by the Allegheny County Office of Behavioral Health on Thursday, Oct. 21.
The program, called Stand Together, educates and trains middle school students on how to support their peers who are struggling with their mental health or with substance use disorders, or who are dealing with family members who are dealing with those challenges.
The staff uses a peer-to-peer, service-learning model, which means a small group of students learn about the stigmas surrounding mental health and substance use disorders and about the behavioral health challenges. Then, they share their knowledge in a creative way through a grant funded through the county. Steel Valley Middle School is eager to see the impact those funds will have on the school.
