Steel Valley Elementary opens with official ribbon cutting ceremony

High above the Monongahela, just a couple miles away from where the fabled Homestead Steel Works once stood, something historic has taken place.

For the first time since the Steel Valley School District was formed, elementary students in Homestead, Munhall, and West Homestead will learn together under one roof. They will do so in a state-of-the-art facility that honors the region’s historic past and embraces the possibilities of the future.

The Steel Valley School District formally opened Steel Valley Elementary School on the William V. Campbell Campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, August 21, 2026. In front of nearly 200 students, families, and community members, the district celebrated the opening of the school in advance of the 2026-27 school year.

“What we're doing today is opening the doors for decades of laughter, of discovery, and educational growth for all of our Steel Valley students,” Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Plichta said. “Every aspect of this building, every inch, every part of it had a purpose in the planning. The purpose was to educate our Steel Valley youth to their fullest potential and enable them to achieve their biggest dreams.”

The district was honored to welcome Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis to serve as the keynote speaker of the event. Lt. Gov. Davis praised the district’s investment in its students and recalled his initial meeting with district board members Jim Bulger and Dan Rojtas back when he was running for state representative. Mr. Bulger and Mr. Rojtas asked him if he would support an initiative to build a new school.

“That was the easiest commitment I've ever made as an elected official, because I believe the young people in this community and in this Mon Valley are some of the brightest young people in this country and in this world,” Lt. Gov. Davis said. “This community has produced governors, members of Congress. It's produced titans in industry, business leaders. Some of the wealthiest people on the planet started here in the Steel Valley community, and I know that our young people can live up to their fullest potential if we're willing to invest in them, if we're willing to give them state-of-the-art facilities to make sure that they get an education that's world-class.”

Steel Valley Elementary will serve students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. It replaces Barrett Elementary in Homestead and Park Elementary in Munhall, both of which have stood for over 100 years. Robyn Guy, president of the Steel Valley School District Board of Directors, said that the construction of the new elementary school reflects the community’s commitment to its children’s future.

“Today marks more than the opening of a new space. It represents our community's continued investment in our students, our staff, and the future of education,” Ms. Guy said. “While we may mourn the passing of Barrett and Park Schools, we also celebrate the future.”

Steel Valley Elementary will embrace the traditions and memories of Barrett and Park, but the faculty and staff are eager to help the students forge new ones. The design of the school enabled the district to bring back fifth graders from the middle school, providing them with an additional year to grow and mature into leaders. It also has room for potential enrollment growth within the district.

The school is bright and colorful, with two outdoor learning terraces on the second floor. It features a full-sized gymnasium with a stage, a music room with performance space, an art room with a kiln, dedicated life skills and autistic classrooms, student support and special education learning spaces, versatile small group and large group learning areas, a media center and library, and a STREAM classroom. Supported by a grant from U.S. Steel, the STREAM space will enable students to more deeply explore their lessons in science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and math.

“Today is about much more than bricks and mortar. It's about opportunity. It's about hope and the future of our children. This building represents our community's commitment to providing every student with a safe, welcoming, and inspiring place to learn and grow,” Steel Valley Elementary principal Kim Winters said. “We are not simply opening a new school; we are building one school united by a shared purpose, helping every child reach their fullest potential. As we dedicate Steele Valley Elementary today, let us also dedicate ourselves to creating a school where every child feels valued, every family feels welcome, and every student has the opportunity to succeed.”

The district was also honored to have State Senator Nick Pisciottano, State Representative Dan Goughnour, Mayor Mary Nesby of Homestead, Mayor Joe Baran of West Homestead, Mayor Rob Falce of Munhall, and members of all three borough councils in attendance for the ceremony. The celebration included a performance of the national anthem and the Alma mater by the Steel Valley Marching Band.

Dr. Plichta also recognized the construction team that brought the building to life. Pittsburgh-based DRAW Collective worked with the district on the designs from an early stage. The construction process was managed by Eckles Construction Services, while Rycon Construction served as the general contractor.

Thanks to their hard work, the Steel Valley School District’s dream has become a reality.

“They'll learn together. They'll play together. They'll grow together, and over time, those shared experiences become something bigger than a school. They become an identity. They become community. They become home,” said Dan Rojtas, vice president of the Steel Valley School District Board of Directors. “We are not building a school; we are building beginnings. We are building belief. We are building futures. And one day, long after today, the most important thing anyone will be able to say about this place is not what it looked like; it will be what it made possible.”

The celebration of the opening of Steel Valley Elementary will continue with a community open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 22. A special parent night will be held on Wednesday, August 26 at 5 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. All students in the Steel Valley School District will begin the 2026-27 school year on Monday, August 31.
